en.Wedoany.com Reported - Elexon will launch its smart data storage repository this autumn, a plan confirmed by a UK government decision that recognized the repository's role in building the digital infrastructure needed for a smarter, more flexible electricity system.

The decision was based on a joint scoping exercise by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) on expanding access to smart meter data. The review concluded that Elexon's repository is the fastest and most cost-effective way to make electricity smart meter data available, while supporting consumer interests, innovation, and decarbonization goals.

The repository will provide open access to half-hourly electricity consumption data, enabling businesses and innovators to develop new products and services that help consumers participate in a more flexible energy system. It will form part of a broader digital platform initiative being developed jointly with the National Energy System Operator (NESO) and the Retail Energy Code Company (RECCo), providing the digital backbone for a modern electricity market.

Initially, the platform will offer aggregated household and business consumption data from autumn 2026. Individual consumer-level data will be available after integration with RECCo's Consumer Consent Solution, expected in spring 2027, allowing consumers to control how their energy data is shared.

The repository will also support improved grid planning, reduce constraint costs, and help unlock greater value from commercial and industrial energy users. Elexon stated that the platform will include robust security measures and fully comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Peter Stanley, CEO of Elexon, said that making half-hourly electricity consumption data widely available is crucial for enabling businesses to develop new products and services, driving innovation, and helping consumers interact more effectively with a decarbonized energy system. He added that the company recognizes the importance of strong governance, security, and privacy protections, and will continue to collaborate with stakeholders in developing the repository.
