en.Wedoany.com Reported - Chile's Fepasa and Sotraser have jointly launched a multimodal transport pilot project, combining a freight train with a fleet of trucks for the first time to transport finished products to the Biobío Region.
The pilot program aims to build a more efficient and sustainable domestic supply model by integrating rail, trucks, and dedicated transshipment terminals. The project connects the Metropolitan Region and the Biobío Region, with Fepasa handling the rail segment and Sotraser deploying electric trucks for road transport.
The products transported in this pilot are primarily daily consumer goods, with several well-known companies participating in the initiative, including CCU, Grupo Falabella, ICB, Concha y Toro, Melón, and Nutrisco. The containerized cargo includes clothing, beverages, and other everyday items used by the public.
The multimodal transport system aims to reduce freight costs and minimize delivery delays caused by road incidents or accidents. The combined use of trains and trucks provides a safer and more sustainable product supply, with the ultimate goal of reducing reliance on traditional road transport, enabling faster and more economical delivery of mass consumer goods to households. The challenge for the project lies in integrating other freight modes without abandoning road transport, in order to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and prevent delivery delays due to unforeseen events such as road accidents.
