China's Booster Robotics Sweeps All Three Gold Medals in Humanoid Soccer at 2026 RoboCup
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The 2026 RoboCup was held from June 30 to July 6 in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea, with teams from dozens of countries participating. In all three categories of humanoid robot soccer, teams using equipment from Beijing Booster Robotics achieved a medal sweep.

Among the 59 teams in the Humanoid League, 38 used Booster's robots. These teams swept the gold and silver medals in the KidSize, TeenSize, and AdultSize categories, as well as most podium positions. Tsinghua University's Hephaestus team won the AdultSize category using the Booster T1 robot, Germany's B-Human team won the TeenSize category using the K1 robot, and a team named Invic won the KidSize category using the K1 Air robot.
This comprehensive victory reflects a key shift in the field. In the past, each team had to build robots from scratch, expending significant effort on mechanics, hardware, and teaching the robot to walk. Now, most leading teams purchase off-the-shelf hardware, focusing all their efforts on software development, particularly perception, instantaneous decision-making, and multi-robot coordination. Booster provides the hardware and continuously tackles challenges such as running, sudden stops, and standing up after falls. The core of competition has shifted from "who can build a robot" to "who can make it smarter." This division impacts not only soccer; reliable locomotion allows researchers to test complex "embodied intelligence" in the real world, rather than solely in simulated environments.
The vision of defeating human champions has been RoboCup's long-term mission since its founding in 1997, aiming for a team of autonomous humanoid robots to defeat the reigning FIFA World Cup champion under standard FIFA rules by 2050. In 2026, RoboCup achieved, for the first time on real hardware, an 11 vs. 11 match between two complete humanoid robot teams, though the score was not spectacular: Germany's B-Human team defeated fellow German team HTWK Robots 4-0. However, a decade ago, stable walking was still a challenge. In other areas, humanoid robots have already surpassed human records in half-marathon events.
Booster's victory is also a business strategy. The company not only sells robots but also seeks to control the operating platform they run on. It recently launched Booster Studio, touted as the first complete development environment for embodied intelligence, allowing engineers to program, simulate, and deploy robot behaviors before touching real hardware. One of the youngest teams in Incheon came from a middle school in Macau; students trained their code in the simulator before loading it onto real robots. Booster has also launched a 3v3 robot soccer league to attract more developers, with the philosophy of an open ecosystem where it serves as the underlying platform. This trend aligns with the broader context: last year, China accounted for approximately 90% of global humanoid robot shipments, with companies like Unitree leading the way.
Caution regarding this progress is also warranted. A viral video showed a Booster T1 robot cleanly kicking a penalty through a wall, but robots with such powerful kicks have injured bystanders in other competitions. Currently, robot soccer remains a research tool disguised as a spectacle, and the gap to real-world World Cup teams is still enormous. However, the direction is clear: the difficulty is no longer primarily in the body, but in the brain, and that is the part advancing most rapidly.
