Calpine Strikes New Agreement for Texas Power Generation CCS Project

Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 28, Exxon Mobil has entered into an agreement with Calpine to transport and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons of CO2 annually from Calpine’s Baytown Energy Center, a natural gas combined cycle facility located near Houston, Texas. The agreement marks a significant step in advancing sustainable energy practices in the region.

The initiative is part of Calpine’s Baytown Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project, which focuses on reducing emissions at the Baytown Energy Facility. The project aims to capture 95% of CO2 emissions from two of the facility’s three turbines. This effort will allow the facility to continue generating electricity and producing steam for nearby industrial applications while significantly lowering its environmental impact.

In July 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations provided $12.5 million in funding for the Baytown CCS Project as part of a larger federal cost-sharing commitment of up to $270 million. This initial funding supports Phase 1 activities, including engineering, project design, community outreach, and planning: “This investment will help us advance innovative solutions to meet energy demands sustainably,” a Calpine spokesperson stated.

The collaboration between Exxon Mobil and Calpine reflects ongoing efforts to implement effective carbon management technologies. By combining expertise in energy production and carbon storage, the project contributes to cleaner industrial operations near Houston while maintaining reliable energy supply for the region.
