en.Wedoany.com Reported - Space42, a UAE-based space technology company, in collaboration with Skylo Technologies, a global non-terrestrial network service provider, has successfully completed testing of direct-to-device SMS and SOS services using standard Android smartphones in the UAE. The tests confirmed two-way connectivity via Space42's next-generation mobile communications satellite, Thuraya-4, verifying that standard devices can access satellite communications without the need for additional hardware.

The tests were integrated using Skylo's 3GPP-compliant non-terrestrial network platform. The results demonstrate the potential of the direct-to-device messaging service within the UAE and the broader coverage area of Thuraya-4, further strengthening Space42's role in the national telecommunications ecosystem. Ali Al Hashmi, CEO of Space42's Space Services division, stated that the focus on direct-to-device capabilities is central to its strategy of becoming a global leader in non-terrestrial networks, and this successful test proves that Thuraya-4 can deliver carrier-grade resilient messaging directly to devices, serving enterprises, governments, mobile operators, and consumers. Parth Trivedi, CEO and co-founder of Skylo, noted that the standard enables devices to achieve satellite messaging capabilities through existing networks, and this collaboration has validated two-way SMS and SOS services on Thuraya-4 for standard Android devices without requiring changes to operator core infrastructure.

For mobile network operators, the tests confirm that direct-to-device messaging can be transmitted using their own SIM and identity frameworks without altering existing infrastructure. For consumers and enterprise users, this means the ability to use SMS communication and SOS functions in areas with limited terrestrial coverage, such as deserts, mountains, and maritime regions. The commercial launch of direct-to-device messaging services is expected before the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval. Space42 and Skylo also plan to develop additional features on the same 3GPP non-terrestrial network layer, including location sharing, application and IoT data transmission, and automotive connectivity, with each feature further expanding Thuraya-4's coverage for existing and future smart devices.
