US FPUSA Acquires 920MWh Zinc Energy Storage Project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Frontier Power USA (FPUSA) has exercised its exclusive option to acquire four battery energy storage system (BESS) projects from clean energy platform Stella Energy Solutions, with a total capacity of approximately 230MW/920MWh.

The selected projects include the Blanquilla BESS project, Aransas Pass project, Nash project, and Wallis project. At least two of these—Blanquilla BESS and Aransas Pass—appear to be located in Texas, while Nash and Wallis may also be in the state, though this remains unclear. The Blanquilla BESS, located in Nueces County, Texas, has a capacity of 201MW and is expected to commence operations in December 2027.

These projects plan to utilize Eos Energy Enterprises' Z3 zinc long-duration energy storage battery technology. The final completion of the transaction depends on the success of Eos's recently announced rights offering.

The aforementioned projects are the first to advance under the strategic framework previously announced by FPUSA and Stella. This framework establishes a pathway for transferring over 2GWh of BESS projects from Stella's late-stage development pipeline into the FPUSA platform, with Stella serving as FPUSA's designated execution partner. Upon signing definitive agreements, FPUSA will provide 100% of the construction equity for the projects, with Stella acting as the designated execution partner until the projects achieve commercial operation.

FPUSA's equity base is supported by commitments from funds and accounts managed by Cerberus Capital Management, in addition to anticipated investments from Hudson Bay Capital as previously announced and funds raised through the rights offering. The company has engaged KKR Capital Markets to assist in structuring long-term project financing.

Frontier Power also remains active in the UK. In April 2025, it announced a partnership with Eos to deploy up to 5GWh of zinc hybrid cathode battery energy storage systems in the UK. In response to the new cap-and-floor revenue mechanism for long-duration energy storage established by UK regulator Ofgem, Frontier Power has also formed a partnership with vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) manufacturer Invinity, securing up to 2GWh of VRFB systems to participate in relevant tenders.
