Through this acquisition, ABB integrates three production sites in Italy, over 130 employees, and a specialty transformer business with annual revenue of approximately 80 million euros into its industrial automation portfolio.
Founded in 1946 and headquartered near Milan, Italy, Specialtrasfo S.p.A. is a family-owned company specializing in medium-voltage specialty transformers. Its main business includes customized power conversion equipment such as variable frequency transformers and rectifier transformers, with products installed in over 70 countries worldwide. The company serves heavy industrial sectors including energy, metallurgy, mining, industrial processing, marine, and offshore operations. In 2025, ABB contributed approximately half of Specialtrasfo's revenue through its integrated product portfolio.

ABB Group is a global technology leader in electrification and automation, operating in over 100 countries with approximately 110,000 employees worldwide. Following this acquisition, Specialtrasfo will be integrated into the High Voltage Solutions division of ABB's Motion Control business segment. Juha Koskela, President of the division, stated that this strategic acquisition will enhance ABB's resilience in the transformer supply chain. Joerg Stutz, Business Line Manager for ABB High Voltage Solutions, noted that combining Specialtrasfo's specialty transformer technology with ABB's motors and variable frequency drives enables the company to offer customers one-stop services covering the entire lifecycle.
ABB stated that the continuous growth in global electricity demand is a key driver for increased transformer demand. This acquisition aims to enhance ABB's supply chain resilience for critical components in industrial power conversion through vertical integration. After the transaction, Specialtrasfo will continue to serve existing customers while jointly offering integrated solutions with ABB, including medium-voltage transformers, medium- and low-voltage drives, synchronous motors and generators, switchgear, and customized electrical houses.
This acquisition is a strategic move by ABB to address the global trend of industrial electrification and refine its drive system product portfolio, helping to enhance its comprehensive service capabilities in key industrial applications.
