en.Wedoany.com Reported - Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA) has received approval to demolish five vacant old buildings in the Dalintober area north of Campbeltown and construct 37 new homes, with the project expected to be ready for rental by 2028.

ACHA gets green light for Dalintober development

The 37 new homes, located between John Street, Princes Street, and High Street, include 8 cottage flats, 11 houses, 6 amenity bungalows for the elderly, and 12 apartment units, all managed by ACHA. The development site is currently occupied by five apartment blocks built in 1939, which have been vacant for several years. The project will demolish these old buildings and replace them with new, high-quality, energy-efficient family homes. The new homes will feature low-carbon, sustainable heating systems, providing warm and cost-effective living for future tenants. Former tenants of the existing Dalintober buildings can choose to return to the area once the homes are completed.

Cathy Grant, tenant chair of ACHA's management committee, stated that the committee is delighted to move forward with this project, which has been in development since 2017. The existing buildings are no longer suitable, and the new development will significantly reduce running costs for residents. She thanked Argyll and Bute Council, the Scottish Government, and development consultants ECD Architects, MacDonald & Cameron, Armour Construction, Fairhurst, and CDM Scotland for their assistance in obtaining planning permission.

Councillor Jim Lynch, leader of Argyll and Bute Council, said the council has worked closely with ACHA for several years, first agreeing on the demolition of the vacant apartments (which are listed and required consent from Historic Environment Scotland), and then handling the necessary planning application for the new development. The site has been included in the council's Strategic Housing Investment Plan, providing much-needed new affordable housing in Campbeltown, helping to address the housing emergency, and making a significant contribution to local regeneration and placemaking.

Demolition of the existing buildings is expected to begin in early 2027, with construction of the new homes starting shortly thereafter. ACHA aims to have the homes ready for rental by 2028.
