en.Wedoany.com Reported - Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recently inspected the rehabilitation project of the Navotas Fish Port Complex, stating that he will promote the modernization of the country's premier fish port and enhance its capacity to cope with frequent flooding.

Accompanied by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and officials from Navotas City, the President observed the unloading, handling, and trading of fish products at the first market, and toured the facility's operations and rehabilitation progress. Philippine Fisheries Development Authority General Manager Glenn Pangapalan briefed the President on port operations and the rehabilitation progress of the first and second markets.

The rehabilitation project primarily addresses frequent flooding during high tides and typhoons, while simultaneously upgrading the facility to meet growing demands for fish product handling and vessel operations. The project includes the repair and construction of market halls, reinforced concrete wharves, drainage and sewage treatment facilities, reclamation works, a ship repair yard, backup areas, utilities, and related port infrastructure.

Upon completion, the project is expected to provide safer, cleaner, more efficient, and climate-resilient facilities, thereby improving the unloading, handling, and distribution of fish products, reducing transportation and logistics costs, maintaining fish quality and minimizing losses, while creating employment and livelihood opportunities for Navotas residents and surrounding communities.

The Navotas Fish Port Complex was built in 1974, completed in 1977 under a loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank, and officially opened in 1979. It has since become one of the country's largest fish ports and one of the largest in Asia. In recent years, port operations have continued to expand, with fish product unloading volume increasing from 196,580 metric tons in 2023 to 221,692 metric tons in 2025, and vessel arrivals rising from 24,570 to 26,128 over the same period.

The fish port is a major source of fish products for Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.
