en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 11, Spanish group Submer announced the construction of a new-generation artificial intelligence data center in Flix, Catalonia, Spain, with a project investment exceeding €1 billion. The data center will be located on the former industrial site of Spanish company Ercros, and will be developed and operated by UK-based Rubix Data Centers, primarily supporting high-density AI computing, cloud computing, and related digital services.

According to the construction plan, Spanish company Ercros will lease industrial land for the project and provide some supporting services required for data center development. The former site already has industrial land, transportation and communication conditions, and power infrastructure, which can reduce the preliminary work for large-scale computing facilities in land preparation, energy access, and public utilities. The project will be carried out in two phases, and upon full completion, it is expected to provide up to 150 long-term positions in operations, facility engineering, equipment maintenance, security, and on-site services.

According to Spanish industry media Data Center Dynamics, the project plans to build an AI data center capacity of up to approximately 150MW, with construction slated to begin by the end of 2027, expanding in phases based on computing resource demand. The campus will leverage the existing power access capacity of approximately 85MW to 90MW at the former industrial site to support the subsequent deployment of server rooms, server systems, and cooling facilities. However, the 150MW figure is the overall plan disclosed by industry media; Spanish Submer has officially only confirmed that the project investment exceeds €1 billion, without disclosing the specific capacity of each phase.

The data center will adopt a liquid cooling system designed for high-density computing. Spanish Submer stated that the relevant facilities will use efficient liquid cooling technology that requires no water consumption during operation to handle the high heat density loads generated by AI servers and accelerated computing equipment. In addition to cooling equipment, the project also requires the construction of data server rooms, power supply and distribution systems, communication networks, equipment hosting spaces, and operation management facilities, forming the physical infrastructure to support large-scale AI applications.

The project is planned to begin phased operations in 2029. UK-based Rubix Data Centers will continue to be responsible for campus operations after construction is completed, providing computing infrastructure to long-term clients according to agreed service standards. The project is currently in the agreement signing and preliminary development phase, with civil construction not yet started, and no details on servers, GPUs, cabinet quantities, or initial clients have been announced.

This construction will transform the former industrial land in Flix into an AI data center campus. Its core node is that the project entity, operator, and land use plan have been determined. However, subsequent steps still require engineering design, administrative approvals, infrastructure renovation, and phased construction. Therefore, it cannot be stated that the data center has already started construction or formed a 150MW computing capacity.
