en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 13, 2026, Russia's Tatneft launched a project to inject purified wastewater from the Almetyevsk wastewater treatment plant into oil reservoirs, aiming to conserve river water from the Kama River and natural water sources. After treatment with scale inhibitors and bactericides, the wastewater is injected into the Devonian and Bobrikov formations via cluster pumping stations of the Almetyevsk Oil and Gas Production Department and the Jalil Oil and Gas Production Department.

The project plans to achieve a wastewater injection volume of 6 million cubic meters by 2026, with the potential to increase to 9 million cubic meters annually in the future. Tatneft stated that such wastewater, previously considered waste, has now become a resource for maintaining reservoir pressure. In the long term, the company aims to completely replace all freshwater used in oil production with wastewater, with the potential resource volume of wastewater estimated at 40 to 42 million cubic meters per year.

By treating urban wastewater and reinjecting it into oil reservoirs, the project reduces consumption of natural water sources such as the Kama River while utilizing wastewater to maintain reservoir pressure and enhance oil recovery. As a major oil and gas producer in Russia, Tatneft continues to explore water resource recycling methods in oil extraction. After implementation, the project is expected to save the company significant amounts of freshwater resources while reducing the environmental impact of wastewater discharge.
