After multiple rounds of expert review and nationwide public consultation, the standard was approved, marking that the by-product industrial salt from zero-discharge wastewater treatment in China's steel enterprises has moved from a "no standard" state into a new phase of standardized and regulated development.
For a long time, the by-product industrial sodium salt from steel enterprise production wastewater has faced a lack of applicable national standards. The current "Industrial Salt" (GB/T 5462-2015) only applies to industrial salt derived from seawater, lake salt, or salt lake brine, rock salt, or underground brine, and does not cover industrial salt produced through zero-discharge wastewater processes. This situation has constrained the resource utilization of by-product industrial salt and left downstream chemical enterprises without a unified basis for acceptance, hindering the coordinated green and low-carbon development of the industrial chain.
To address this industry pain point, Baowu Environmental Technology took the lead in initiating standard development. In August 2020, the company completed the compilation of an enterprise standard for by-product industrial salt, which was filed, released, and made public on the official website of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision, marking the first step in standardizing product quality. In July 2022, two group standards—"Industrial Salt from Coking Wastewater" and "Industrial Salt from Comprehensive Wastewater of Iron and Steel Enterprises"—were successively released, establishing product specifications in specific subfields and accumulating experience for the development of industry standards. In 2024, the company officially initiated the development of the industry standard "Industrial Sodium Salt from Production Wastewater of Iron and Steel Enterprises."
The release of this standard provides a clear implementation basis for by-product industrial salt from steel enterprises, opening a compliant channel for product sales to external markets. By-product industrial salt can serve as an important supplement to traditional industrial salt, helping to control raw material product quality, regulate market order, and promote coordinated green and low-carbon development across the upstream and downstream industrial chains.
