en.Wedoany.com Reported - Chile's Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications (MTT), through the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel), launched the National Emergency Connectivity Plan this Wednesday to address the frontal system expected to affect multiple regions and ensure the continuity of telecommunications services.
Developed jointly with representatives from internet, telephone, and critical infrastructure companies, the plan aims to activate preventive protocols, strengthen network monitoring, and ensure a coordinated response to potential emergencies. Undersecretary of Telecommunications Romina Garrido stated that the plan has been deployed nationwide, with a focus on ensuring the continuity of telecommunications services, which are vital for providing information, coordinating assistance, and enabling timely action during emergencies. She added that the actions are designed to enhance coordination with industry companies and the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (Senapred), strengthen mobile and fiber optic network monitoring, and require companies to develop contingency plans, configure energy backups, and implement tools such as national emergency automatic roaming.
Measures already taken include mitigating the vulnerability of mobile and fixed networks to climate events such as power outages, damage to backbone fiber optics, and coverage disruptions in remote areas. The plan includes 10 specific actions: continuous network status monitoring by Subtel and telecom companies; ensuring energy backup for mobile sites, up to 48 hours for Tier 1 critical infrastructure and at least 4 hours for Tier 2; coordinating with the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels (SEC) and distribution companies to prioritize power restoration for critical nodes; activating national emergency automatic roaming as per Senapred directives; 24/7 monitoring of backbone networks (including FON, FOA, and submarine fiber optics) through Network Operations Centers (NOCs); deploying mobile communication vehicles in areas with service disruptions as per Senapred directives; activating emergency repair teams to restore damaged infrastructure; supervising and ensuring the operation of the Emergency Alert System (SAE) for sending georeferenced messages; imposing sanctions and compensation for violations; and requiring companies to promptly inform users about emergencies and large-scale service outages.
MTT and Subtel call on citizens to use connectivity responsibly during the frontal system, prioritizing text messages and instant messaging applications, making only brief calls when necessary, and avoiding video transmission, large file downloads, and excessive use of social media to prevent network congestion. Companies involved in the actions include Chile Telcos, ClaroVTR, CTR, Entel, GTD, IDICAM, Movistar, Mundo, On Net Fibra, and WOM.
