en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 17, Chilean renewable energy developer Consorcio Austral submitted environmental assessment documents for the Acuario green ammonia project, advancing an integrated energy project located on the northern shore of the Strait of Magellan. The green ammonia project plans an investment of approximately $4.7 billion, encompassing green hydrogen production, green ammonia facilities, and supporting wind power infrastructure.
According to the project plan, the Acuario green ammonia project will build a production facility with an annual capacity of 4,100 tons of green ammonia, along with a supporting 1.73 GW wind farm. The project plans to install 173 wind turbines, as well as construct a battery energy storage system and an underground 220 kV transmission line to provide power support for hydrogen production and ammonia synthesis units.
The green ammonia project adopts the water electrolysis hydrogen production route, using renewable electricity to drive electrolysis equipment to produce green hydrogen, which is then combined with nitrogen separated from the air to synthesize green ammonia via the traditional Haber-Bosch process. This route primarily targets the export market, serving sectors such as shipping fuel, fertilizers, and industrial decarbonization.
The Acuario green ammonia project is currently in the environmental assessment and preliminary development stage, with subsequent steps requiring engineering design, equipment procurement, financing arrangements, and commercial partnerships. The project plans to commence construction in the third quarter of 2029 and begin operations in the third quarter of 2033. If the project progresses smoothly, it will form an integrated energy industry chain combining wind power, hydrogen production, energy storage, and chemical manufacturing.
