Capwatt completes its first 38MW energy storage project sale in Spain

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Capwatt has completed its first transaction in the battery energy storage system (BESS) sector, selling a 38MW project in Catalonia, Spain, to Axpo, Switzerland's largest electricity producer and a leader in international energy trading and solar and wind energy marketing.

Most of the energy storage projects developed by Capwatt adopt a standalone model, i.e., independent storage facilities directly connected to the transmission or distribution grid. These projects can also take the form of co-located systems, integrated into existing or under-development renewable energy power plants as a direct complement to solar or wind projects.

Luís Castro Rocha, Head of Capwatt's Utility-Scale Business, stated that against the backdrop of increasing renewable energy penetration, energy storage is a key element in ensuring grid security and resilience. The intermittency of solar and wind power generation requires solutions capable of managing supply-demand imbalances, stabilizing the grid, and ensuring that generated electricity is not wasted. The systems developed by the company precisely meet this need, helping to enhance power system flexibility, drive decarbonization, and achieve a more robust and reliable energy transition.

The company explained in a statement that this new transaction combines the sale of project assets with a development mandate granted to Capwatt, whereby Capwatt is responsible for the entire permitting process until the project reaches ready-to-build (RTB) status.

Currently, this BESS business unit has a project pipeline of approximately 2GW across Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Poland at various stages of development, with the core business being the development and permitting of energy storage projects from the initial stage to RTB status.
