Wedoany.com Report-May 25, JCE Energy, based in Aberdeen, has designed and delivered a modular solar power system for Aquaterra Energy, a UK-based offshore energy engineering solutions provider, for the Sea Swift production platform located offshore Angola. The system, developed under a £1.5 million (approximately $2 million) contract, supports an unmanned platform operated by a major energy company.
The solar power system features over 100 offshore-grade solar panels, engineered to optimize energy capture in marine environments while resisting saltwater corrosion and harsh weather conditions. The platform operates autonomously, relying entirely on solar energy to eliminate the need for traditional fuel sources, supporting zero-emission offshore production. Stewart Maxwell, Technical Director of Aquaterra Energy, stated: “As operators look to reduce their carbon footprint while managing offshore platform costs, we’ve ensured that Sea Swift is ready by reimagining topside power sources.”
Approximately 90% of the system’s design, manufacturing, and assembly took place at JCE Energy’s Aberdeen headquarters, with additional fabrication in Plymouth. The project involved over 50 personnel, including engineers, project managers, electrical fitters, and mechanical specialists. The modular design allows for future scalability without significant redesign or operational interruptions. Energy storage systems ensure consistent output during low sunlight, reducing reliance on diesel generators and cutting CO2 emissions by at least 90%.
The Sea Swift platform is expected to reduce lifetime operating costs by about £5.9 million over 30 years. Marco Gheza, General Manager of JCE Energy, noted: “Our solar power package for the project stands as a testament to the evolving energy sector’s potential to balance operational needs with environmental and social responsibilities.” The platform supports diverse applications, including oil and gas, carbon capture and storage, offshore wind, and green hydrogen developments.
