en.Wedoany.com Reported - Global Power Generation (GPG) has commenced construction of a hybrid project on the Fraser Coast in Queensland, Australia, comprising 330MW of solar photovoltaic capacity and a 180MW battery energy storage system.

The Fraser Coast Solar and Storage Plant is GPG's largest renewable energy project under development in Australia, located near the town of Brooweena, covering 555 hectares currently used for livestock grazing. The project has secured over €300 million (US$342 million) in investment and has signed a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to guarantee long-term electricity sales. Construction has officially commenced, with commercial operations targeted for 2028, when it will connect to the National Electricity Market (NEM) via a 275kV transmission line linking to Powerlink's Teebar substation.

The project received federal environmental approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act) in late 2025. During the assessment phase, the solar capacity was listed as 290MW, which was revised to 330MW upon entering the construction phase.

The Fraser Coast facility is GPG's second solar PV plus storage hybrid project in Australia. Previously, GPG commissioned the Cunderdin hybrid project in Western Australia in 2025, combining a 128MW solar plant with a 55MW/220MWh battery energy storage system supplied by Sungrow, making it the first grid-connected large-scale hybrid project in the state. Weeks before construction began, GPG also commissioned two solar plants in Australia with a combined capacity of 360MW: the 260MW Glenellen project in New South Wales and the 96MW Bundaberg plant in Queensland, the latter being Naturgy's first solar facility in the state. These additions bring GPG's total installed capacity in Australia to 1.3GW, encompassing 10 operational assets, including six wind farms, a battery energy storage system in the Australian Capital Territory, and the Cunderdin hybrid project.

GPG Australia's A$2.3 billion (US$1.61 billion) portfolio financing completed in December 2024 provides a funding platform for ongoing development activities. The transaction covered eight operational assets, established GPG's relationship with a consortium of infrastructure lenders, and set a precedent for portfolio-level financing to support a large development pipeline. Naturgy operates in Australia through GPG, holding a 75% majority stake, with the Kuwait Investment Authority holding the remaining 25%.
