en.Wedoany.com Reported - A $50 million repair project for the San Remo Bridge has commenced, aiming to enhance the long-term durability of this critical link between mainland Victoria and Phillip Island.

Also known as the Phillip Island Bridge, it connects San Remo and Newhaven, carrying approximately 3.5 million visitors and up to 15,000 vehicles daily, making it one of Victoria's busiest transport links.

The repair project is expected to be completed by mid-2028, with vehicle and pedestrian access maintained during construction. Lane and shared path closures will be kept to a minimum, and vessel passage under the bridge will remain possible during the works.

From August 3, 2026, to the end of 2026, a temporary mass limit of 62.5 tonnes will apply to heavy vehicles using the bridge. Passenger cars, grocery deliveries, and essential services are unaffected. Heavy vehicle operators are advised to consult the National Network Map of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator before traveling to confirm current access arrangements.

The repair project involves high-tech operations, and measures will be taken to minimize impacts on the surrounding marine environment.

Victoria's Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Ros Spence, stated that the project will help ensure the bridge remains a reliable transport link for decades to come. "We are advancing the repair work on the San Remo Bridge to keep the millions of motorists who rely on it each year safe and reliable," Spence said. "The bridge will remain open during construction, and lane closures will be kept to a minimum."

Jordan Crugnale, Member for the Bass electorate, said the investment reflects the bridge's importance to the local community. "This $50 million investment recognizes the importance of the San Remo Bridge to families on the Bass Coast and ensures it will serve the community for generations to come," Crugnale said.
