Wedoany.com Report-May 28, Saint-Gobain S.A., based in Courbevoie, France, has revealed plans to establish a new low-carbon stone wool insulation plant in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, U.K. The facility, situated on a site owned by the company, is scheduled to start production in 2027.

The plant will initially produce 50,000 tons of high-performance stone wool insulation annually for the U.K. market, with the capacity to expand to 100,000 tons per year. This output will address the increasing need for sustainable insulation solutions in the region.

Equipped with advanced technology, the facility will feature a fully electric furnace powered by renewable electricity. This innovative approach will significantly reduce the carbon footprint (scope 1 and 2) of the stone wool insulation, enabling customers to lower the embodied carbon in their construction projects. The initiative aligns with the U.K.’s growing demand for environmentally friendly building materials.

The new plant enhances Saint-Gobain’s extensive portfolio in the U.K., which includes plasterboard, construction chemicals, glazing, insulation, and steel frame structural systems. These integrated solutions strengthen the company’s position as a leader in light and sustainable construction, particularly in building envelopes, and are expected to drive further growth in the market.

“This investment underscores our commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable solutions for our customers,” said a Saint-Gobain spokesperson. “The Melton Mowbray facility will play a key role in meeting the U.K.’s need for low-carbon construction materials.”

The project supports Saint-Gobain’s broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable development. By leveraging renewable energy and cutting-edge manufacturing processes, the company aims to contribute to a more sustainable construction industry in the U.K.
