Wedoany.com Report-May 30, Valencia Digital Port Connect (VDPC) has selected Sagunto, Spain, as the site for the Barracuda submarine cable project, in collaboration with Teset Capital. The initiative includes a multipurpose data center in Sagunto, which will serve as the cable’s landing station. VDPC emphasized that this choice supports its aim to operate as a neutral provider with high interconnection capacity, enhancing digital infrastructure in the region.
The Barracuda Project establishes the first direct submarine cable link between Spain and Italy, designed to provide the highest capacity and lowest latency between the two nations. With a total investment of approximately €100 million, the project is slated to begin operations in early 2028. The 1,070-kilometer cable will span the Mediterranean, connecting Sagunto to Genoa, and will feature 12 fiber pairs, each with a 32 terabits per second capacity. It will link Madrid and Milan, offering services such as dark fiber, spectrum, and lit capacity under various contract models.
Juan Carlos García, VDPC’s project lead, stated: “The Barracuda Project positions Sagunto as a key digital hub, fostering connectivity and innovation across Europe. Our partnership with Teset Capital ensures a robust and sustainable infrastructure for future growth.” The 4,600-square-meter landing station in Sagunto is designed to accommodate up to four cable systems, with four rooms housing over 400 racks. It includes flexible infrastructure to support artificial intelligence services and a sustainable energy supply, aligning with environmental goals.
The project strengthens digital connectivity between Spain and Italy, supporting data-driven industries and enhancing communication networks without affecting consumption or trade dynamics. The Sagunto data center and landing station will facilitate high-speed data transfer, benefiting businesses and communities in both countries. The initiative is expected to drive economic growth in Sagunto by attracting technology investments and creating job opportunities.
By establishing a direct, high-capacity link, the Barracuda Project contributes to Europe’s digital infrastructure, ensuring reliable and efficient connectivity. The collaboration between VDPC and Teset Capital underscores a commitment to advancing sustainable and innovative telecommunications solutions in the Mediterranean region.
