Colombia Launches Tender for $3.55 Billion Northern Regional Railway Project
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Colombia has issued a tender notice for the construction of the Northern Regional Railway (Regiotram del Norte) commuter train project, along with the publication of preliminary bidding terms. The project will connect the capital, Bogotá, with the municipalities of Sabana Centro, with an estimated investment of approximately 11 trillion pesos (about $3.55 billion).
The deadline for comments on the draft tender documents is September 15, 2026, with the final bidding terms scheduled to be published on October 15 of the same year. The deadline for receiving bid submissions is April 15, 2027, with the winning bidder announced on June 16 and the contract signing arranged for the following month. The project has received technical assistance from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
The line will span 48.9 kilometers, designed to meet current and future commuter travel demand in the Sabana Centro region, covering municipalities such as Zipaquirá, Cajicá, and Chía.
The entire line will feature 17 stations and 26 fully electric trains, with connections to the local public transportation system, including two lines of the Bogotá Metro, the TransMilenio bus rapid transit trunk lines, and the Western Regional Railway (RegioTram de Occidente). The project is expected to benefit approximately 1 million residents and boost travel and tourism between the Sabana region and Bogotá.
The tender has been published on Colombia's public procurement portal Secop II under process number EFR-LP-001-2026.
