en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Administration of the Ports of Sines and the Algarve (APS) is advancing the construction of a new general cargo terminal at the Port of Sines, with a project investment of €90 million and a construction period of 30 months. Once completed, the terminal will accommodate large vessels and feature a direct rail connection.
The environmental impact study for the terminal has completed its public consultation phase within the framework of the Portuguese Environment Agency (Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente). The terminal plan involves two berthing fronts covering a total area of 19 hectares, equipped with roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ramps. The service water depth is 14 meters below the hydrographic datum, with a load-bearing capacity of 25 tons per square meter.
The direct rail connection is considered one of the project's competitive advantages. Cargo can be transferred directly between ships and trains without intermediate transshipment, helping to reduce logistics costs and transport time.
Project documents indicate that the terminal has a design service life of 100 years, with its final use not yet fully determined. Current planning shows that the terminal will be designed to meet the needs of offshore wind industry equipment, general and agricultural bulk cargo handling, as well as Ro-Ro shipping operations.
