UK's Middlegate Water Supply Hub Advances Storage and Pipeline Construction

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 10, construction continued at Anglian Water's Middlegate water supply hub in the UK, with precast wall panels and roofing for the storage reservoir being installed, alongside the simultaneous development of a high-capacity pumping station, water quality treatment facility, and on-site transmission pipelines. The facility is located at the starting point of the 52-kilometer E2L strategic water main and, once completed, will serve the functions of treated water conditioning, storage, and transfer.

The project is being delivered jointly by Anglian Water's @one Alliance and the Strategic Pipeline Alliance, with the scope of works including a storage reservoir, water quality treatment facility, high-lift pumping station, balancing tank, secondary pumping station, and valve control systems. The water quality treatment facility will dose chlorine and orthophosphoric acid to ensure the chemical properties of the incoming water remain compatible with the existing supply network, before it is conveyed via the pumping station to the regional water distribution system.

Nearly 1.6 kilometers of ductile iron pipes, with diameters of 600 mm and 700 mm, are also being laid on site. These pipes will connect the storage reservoir, treatment facilities, and the E2L water main, and will be fitted with motorized valves and interlocking control devices to enable adjustments to the water conveyance route based on supply demand, equipment maintenance, or emergency conditions.

The Middlegate water supply hub is part of Anglian Water's Strategic Pipeline Plan. This plan comprises over 500 kilometers of interconnected pipelines, pumping stations, and treatment facilities, primarily used to transfer treated water between different supply zones. According to Anglian Water's 2026 annual report, 86% of the approximately 320 kilometers of pipelines in the first phase have already been laid.

A digital twin system is being developed in parallel with the construction of the project, which will create a digital model corresponding to the physical facility for real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and operational scenario simulation. Once the storage facilities are operational, they will provide buffer capacity during fluctuations in water demand, equipment maintenance, or network anomalies, while also reducing the supply system's reliance on environmentally sensitive local water sources.

The project utilizes a low-carbon pipeline system supplied by Saint-Gobain PAM. The project team has identified this as the first application of its kind in the UK and one of only four similar applications globally, with an expected reduction of over 80% in associated carbon emissions compared to conventional pipeline solutions. Skanska serves as the main contractor for the project, FLI Precast Solutions is responsible for the storage reservoir structure, and SPP Pumps and AVK UK are providing the pumping and valve equipment, respectively.
