The expansion will add approximately 380,000 square feet to the facility, create an estimated 128 new jobs, and is part of the company's company-wide commitment of over $2 billion in modernization efforts.
Southwire is one of North America's leading wire and cable solution providers. The Starkville facility was originally opened by Phelps Dodge in 1979 and was acquired by Southwire in 1989. The site underwent its first expansion in 2010, when an on-site distribution center was added. This expansion marks the second expansion project for the site, aimed at enhancing the employee experience through a safer, more efficient work environment and strengthening quality control capabilities. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with all new capacity slated to come online in 2028.
Ganesh Ramaswamy, President and CEO of Southwire, stated that this expansion is a significant step in the company's long-term strategy to modernize operations, strengthen its manufacturing footprint, and continue serving customers. Rohan Kelkar, Executive Vice President of the Power and Industrial business, noted that the expansion will help the company build the capacity needed to address electrification, market growth, and the rapid expansion of data centers. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves expressed support for the project, stating it validates the state's ability to undertake manufacturing projects.
