SolarEdge and Infineon Expand Collaboration to Advance 800VDC Solid-State Circuit Breakers

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 9, SolarEdge Technologies and Infineon announced an expansion of their collaboration on power infrastructure for AI and hyperscale data centers, adding the development of solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) technology. The new system targets an 800V DC power distribution architecture, with SolarEdge responsible for the SSCB solution design and Infineon supplying CoolSiC silicon carbide JFET devices for the DC power distribution and fault protection link between solid-state transformers and computer racks.

According to the technical solution announced by both parties, the SSCB interrupts DC faults entirely electronically, with a designed fault interruption time of several microseconds. The device completes interruption without mechanical contacts, with Infineon's CoolSiC JFET serving as the core power device in the protection apparatus. The system will be deployed between SolarEdge's solid-state transformer (SST) and computer racks, forming, together with front-end power conversion equipment, a DC power supply chain from the medium-voltage grid and distribution protection through to the racks.

This collaboration builds on the solid-state transformer project the two companies launched in November 2025. At that time, the two companies began jointly designing, optimizing, and validating 2–5MW modular SST units using Infineon silicon carbide switching devices, capable of converting 13.8–34.5kV medium-voltage AC directly to 800–1500V DC, with a target conversion efficiency exceeding 99%. The newly added SSCB development extends the protection link further to between the SST output and the server racks.

SolarEdge is using this as a foundation to develop an 800V DC power chain for AI data centers, covering medium-voltage grid connection, power conversion, DC power distribution, and fault protection all the way to the computer racks.
