en.Wedoany.com Reported - Recently, the inauguration ceremony for Phase II of the Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit project in Tanzania, constructed by PowerChina, was held. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and African Development Bank President Sidi Ould Tah attended the event. The line had already commenced passenger operations in October 2025, and this inauguration marks the project's entry into full operational phase.

Located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, the project has built a 20.3-kilometer rapid transit corridor connecting Kariakoo and Mbagala areas, passing through the city center and extending along Kilwa Road, with connectivity to Phase I of the rapid transit system. The main works include dedicated bus rapid transit lanes, two overpass bridges, 26 passenger stations, one large bus depot, two off-street terminals, four feeder stations, and one pedestrian footbridge.

The project is financed by a total of US$155 million in funding from the African Development Bank and the Africa Growing Together Fund, with implementation led by the Tanzania National Roads Agency. Since the line commenced passenger operations, travel times along certain sections have been reduced from approximately 90 minutes to 30 minutes, with average daily ridership increasing to around 90,000 passengers; upon full operation, the bus fleet is planned to be equipped with 250 clean-energy vehicles.

During construction, the project created over a thousand local jobs. The line connects the densely populated Mbagala area with Dar es Salaam's city center, further expanding the coverage of the rapid transit network and improving transportation access for residents along the corridor to employment, education, and healthcare facilities.
