en.Wedoany.com Reported - India added 17.04 GW of renewable energy capacity in the first four months of fiscal year 2026-27 (April to July 2026), with solar and wind together accounting for over 96% of the total. According to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), solar added 14.33 GW during the period, while wind added 2.04 GW, totaling 16.38 GW, with solar contributing the most.

As of July 31, 2026, India's total renewable energy installed capacity, including large hydropower, stood at 291.73 GW, and at 239.66 GW excluding large hydropower. Solar added 14,334.05 MW in the four months, accounting for 84% of the total renewable capacity additions including large hydropower, with cumulative installed capacity reaching 164.59 GW. Of this, ground-mounted projects accounted for 122.57 GW, grid-connected rooftop solar for 30.74 GW, the solar component of hybrid projects for 4.77 GW, and off-grid solar for 6.51 GW.

On a monthly trend basis, solar added 11,891.30 MW from April to June, and 2,442.75 MW in July. May saw additions of approximately 2.81 GW, down 2.7% from 2.89 GW in May 2025; June added 5.11 GW, the highest among May, June, and July. July saw a slowdown in additions. With monsoon rainfall likely to diminish significantly in the remaining months of the year, growth is expected to pick up accordingly; part of the slowdown has been attributed to the implementation of the ALCM scheme effective June 1, which was revised in July with exceptions, helping support a subsequent recovery.

Wind power was the second-largest source of additions during the period. From April to July, 2,042.05 MW of wind capacity was added, bringing cumulative installed capacity to 58.14 GW. July added 693.5 MW, the highest single-month figure in these four months; the first three months cumulatively added 1,348.55 MW, with June adding 636.35 MW and May adding 370.45 MW, up approximately 58.5% from 233.7 MW in May 2025.

In July alone, India added 3,136.25 MW of renewable energy capacity (excluding large hydropower), comprising 2,442.75 MW of solar and 693.5 MW of wind, with these two technologies together covering nearly all additions for the month. Including large hydropower, July's renewable additions were also 3,136.25 MW, with no large hydropower projects commissioned during the month. From April to July, total renewable additions including large hydropower stood at 17,037.54 MW, of which large hydropower contributed 650 MW, small hydropower added 10.4 MW, with the remainder coming from solar, wind, and other small renewable categories.
