US United to Operate 5 European Routes with A321XLR

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 25, United Airlines of the US stated that it expects to obtain a sufficient number of Airbus A321XLR aircraft to operate five new European routes added for summer 2027. The capacity will be deployed to Luxembourg, Toulouse and Marseille in France, and Ibiza and Valencia in Spain, with all routes still subject to government approval.

Under the current plan, the Newark-to-Luxembourg route will launch on April 2, 2027, with daily service; the Washington Dulles-to-Toulouse route will launch on April 26, with daily service; the Newark-to-Ibiza route will launch on May 31, with four weekly flights; the Newark-to-Valencia route will launch on June 2, with three weekly flights; and the Newark-to-Marseille route will launch on June 4, with daily service.

These five routes are part of United Airlines' latest round of international network expansion. The company plans to add 10 new international destinations starting in March 2027, spanning Europe and Asia, and will also add routes such as Los Angeles to Osaka, Washington to Milan, and Denver to Paris. The A321XLR is primarily intended for long-haul markets where passenger volumes are insufficient to support widebody aircraft but where there is demand for nonstop service.

As of June 30, 2026, United Airlines has taken delivery of its first A321XLR and holds firm purchase commitments for 49 units of the aircraft type. The company expects to receive 5 aircraft in the second half of 2026 and 15 in 2027, with the remaining 29 scheduled for delivery after 2027. This delivery schedule is based on manufacturer notifications and company estimates, and specific timing may still be subject to changes in production and supply chain conditions.

United Airlines ordered 50 A321XLR aircraft in 2019, with initial plans to take delivery of the first unit in 2024 and deploy it on international routes in 2025; the actual first delivery has since been postponed to 2026. Under current arrangements, the aircraft type will first operate select US domestic routes in September 2026, will be deployed on Washington Dulles-to-Amsterdam and Dublin routes starting December 1, and will take on the new European routes in 2027.

The A321XLR has a maximum range of approximately 8,700 kilometers and is the long-range single-aisle variant of the A321neo family. United Airlines' cabin configuration features 32 premium seats, including 20 Polaris business class suites and 12 Premium Plus seats. In addition to opening transatlantic destinations with smaller passenger volumes, the aircraft type will gradually take over certain long-haul routes currently operated by the Boeing 757.
