PPG Invests $70 Million to Expand Aviation Glass Manufacturing Facility

The project will lease and renovate a new 112,000-square-foot (approximately 10,400-square-meter) facility to accommodate support operations currently housed at the existing production site, freeing up manufacturing space at the original plant to expand production capacity for aircraft cockpit windshields and cabin windows. The investment is part of PPG's ongoing multi-year aviation business expansion program.

The expansion combines newly added support facilities with adjustments to existing plant space. The newly leased facility will primarily handle production support functions, while the existing manufacturing base will free up space for aviation transparency production. PPG plans to improve production organization efficiency through the reconfiguration of plant functions and to reserve conditions for further manufacturing equipment purchases in the future. The company has not disclosed the specific lease location of the new facility, the construction contractor, the amount for equipment procurement, or the number of new production lines.

The Huntsville plant primarily serves the commercial aviation, military aviation, and general aviation markets, with products including aircraft cockpit windshields and cabin windows. Francois Buehlmann, General Manager of PPG's global aviation transparency business, stated that demand for transparencies across the three aviation markets continues to grow, and this investment will increase the plant's production capacity and provide space for subsequent equipment investments. The company did not disclose annual production volumes before and after the expansion, projected additional output, or specific customer orders.

PPG has operated aviation transparency manufacturing facilities in Huntsville for more than 55 years. This investment will be implemented around the existing base and does not involve building a separate aviation coatings production plant.
