en.Wedoany.com Reported - The National Energy Administration released the latest electricity market operation data, showing that China's electricity market-oriented reform continues to advance steadily, with the scale of electricity trading expanding steadily.

According to information published on the WeChat official account of the National Energy Administration, in July 2026, electricity trading institutions across the country completed a trading volume of 740.4 billion kWh, up 18.5% year-on-year, with market participants' enthusiasm for trading continuing to heat up. This data reflects that, as the construction of the electricity market system deepens, an increasing number of power generation enterprises and electricity-consuming enterprises are completing electricity purchases and sales through market-based methods, and the way power resources are allocated is gradually undergoing a market-oriented transformation.

From the perspective of trading scope, intra-provincial trading volume in July reached 549.1 billion kWh, up 19.0% year-on-year, demonstrating strong growth momentum; inter-provincial and cross-regional trading volume stood at 191.3 billion kWh, up 17.2% year-on-year. The growth rate of intra-provincial trading is higher than that of inter-provincial and cross-regional trading, indicating that various regions have achieved notable results in improving their provincial electricity markets and promoting the connection between local power sources and loads, and the self-balancing capacity of intra-provincial power supply and demand is strengthening.

From the perspective of trading varieties, medium- and long-term trading volume in July reached 678.6 billion kWh, continuing to hold the dominant position in market electricity volume; meanwhile, spot trading volume reached 61.8 billion kWh. As an important part of the electricity market system, the continuous accumulation of spot trading volume means that the market pricing mechanism is becoming increasingly mature. Power generation enterprises need to optimize their bidding strategies through real-time gaming, while the electricity-consuming side can better reflect the regulating effect of price signals on loads.

It is worth noting that in terms of green electricity trading, the green electricity trading volume in July was 27.7 billion kWh, up 2.7% year-on-year; in addition, the electricity volume purchased on behalf of customers by grid companies through market-based agency was 87.2 billion kWh. The steady growth of green electricity reflects the rising demand of enterprises and society for clean energy, and has also effectively promoted the expansion of market channels for new energy power generation enterprises.

In terms of cumulative data, from January to July 2026, electricity trading institutions across the country completed a cumulative trading volume of 4,425.2 billion kWh, up 23.4% year-on-year, laying a solid foundation for the continuation of high monthly growth rates. Among this, the cumulative intra-provincial trading volume reached 3,462.6 billion kWh, up 26.8% year-on-year, the fastest growth rate among all categories, while inter-provincial and cross-regional trading volume was 962.6 billion kWh, up 12.5% year-on-year.

From the perspective of the annual trend, the share of intra-provincial trading in the cumulative total continues to rise, and its growth rate is far ahead, indicating that provinces are accelerating the construction of relatively independent and efficiently operating local electricity markets, with significant improvements in the efficiency of intra-provincial resource allocation. At the same time, although the share of spot trading in cumulative electricity volume remains relatively small, it has maintained stable development momentum, with the market moving toward a more refined and real-time direction.

Overall, this set of data clearly outlines the development trajectory of China's electricity market, characterized by continuous expansion and structural optimization, and the relationship between power supply and demand is achieving a more efficient dynamic balance on the market-oriented track. In the next step, with further improvement in the proportion of various trading varieties and the expansion of spot market coverage, the electricity market will play an even more important role in promoting green energy consumption and improving the price formation mechanism, providing solid institutional support for the energy transition.
