USPS Proposes Peak-Season Rate Hikes for Heavy Long-Distance Parcels in 2026

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The U.S. Postal Service has proposed temporary price increases for several package services during the 2026 holiday shipping season, with the largest hikes targeting heavy parcels shipped over long distances.

Following approval by the Board of Governors, the USPS has submitted the proposed changes to the Postal Regulatory Commission for review. If approved, the new rates are scheduled to take effect on October 4 and remain in place through January 16, 2027.

The proposed increases cover four services: Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select. Other postal products and services are not affected by this adjustment. The USPS stated that this seasonal adjustment aims to align pricing for postal retail and commercial customers with market competition practices.

Under the proposed rate hikes, retail prices would increase by approximately 30 cents to $20.80, commercial prices by roughly 40 cents to $18.20, and Parcel Select rates by up to $2.35. The Large Flat Rate Box would see increases between $1.75 and $2.10, while other flat-rate products would rise by approximately 85 cents to $1. Most lightweight parcels are expected to see increases of $1 to $2, while oversized parcels weighing between 26 and 70 pounds shipped via Zones 5 through 9 would face the largest price increases.

Paul Yaussy, head of parcel contract intelligence at Loop, noted that proposed commercial Priority Mail service increases range from approximately 2% to 10%, while USPS Ground Advantage rates would typically rise by 5% to 8%. Yaussy pointed out that the USPS is following the approach FedEx and UPS have used for years—establishing peak-season surcharge windows rather than incorporating holiday costs into base rates.

Dave Sullivan, director of professional services at ShipScience, advised shippers to assess the potential impact based on current package weights and their actual product and shipping zone mix. He noted that packages with billable weights near 24 to 27 pounds require close attention, especially low-density shipments exceeding 1 cubic foot, where slight changes in package dimensions could push them into higher pricing tiers. Sullivan cautioned that repackaging to reduce dimensional weight could save money, but advised against assuming that splitting one package into two would lower costs, as this would mean paying two base postage fees and absorbing two temporary surcharges.

The rate hike proposal comes as the USPS continues to face financial losses. The agency reported a net loss of $2.5 billion in the third fiscal quarter, compared with a net loss of $3.1 billion in the same period last year.
