India's Vizhinjam Port Handles First Import Container
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 31, India's Vizhinjam International Seaport received its first import container, which was shipped from Ningbo, China, and arrived aboard the MSC Sabrina III. Jeromic George, Managing Director of VISL, presided over the flag-off ceremony as the container truck departed the terminal. The container was loaded with engineered building panels, used in the construction industry as a substitute for traditional plywood.

The booking party and cargo type for this container were confirmed in the official statement. The container was booked by BSG Logistics and Ship Chandlers Pvt Ltd, a Thiruvananthapuram-based startup, on behalf of the city's Altair Group, and the cargo consisted of full container load (FCL) engineered building panels. Upon arrival, the cargo was cleared through customs and transported by truck to markets across Kerala. Vizhinjam Port had previously focused primarily on transshipment between vessels; the arrival and departure of this import container marks the port's first complete end-to-end gateway import operation—unloading, customs clearance, and inland transport—rather than merely an authorization or plan.
The significance of this operation lies in distinguishing between two commercial activities: "gateway import" and "transshipment." Transshipment involves transferring containers between vessels without the goods entering the Indian domestic market; gateway import means containers are unloaded at Vizhinjam, complete customs procedures, and then enter the local Kerala market. The arrival of the first import container adds a gateway channel directly serving local importers to Vizhinjam's existing transshipment functions. The port's EXIM operations were launched on August 18, 2026, and this import container is the first cargo to actually arrive following that launch, rather than the authorization milestone itself.
Vizhinjam's transshipment scale provided the operational foundation for launching import functions. The port's first phase began commercial operations on December 3, 2024, with a designed annual capacity of 1 million TEU; in fiscal year 2025–26 it handled 1.297 million TEU with 607 vessel calls, surpassing 2 million TEU cumulatively within 18 months, and welcomed its 1,000th commercial vessel in June 2026. Terminal Investment Limited, a subsidiary of MSC, signed an agreement in June 2026 to acquire a 49% stake in the Vizhinjam port operating company for USD 1.397 billion, with APSEZ retaining 51%. This equity arrangement directly ties the world's largest container shipping line to the port operator at Vizhinjam, providing a carrier-level interface for cargo sourcing and route connectivity for gateway imports.
