Alaska Airlines cancels 7 routes, resumes San Jose-Los Angeles service in California
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Alaska Airlines is undergoing a new round of route network adjustments, canceling 7 routes while resuming one California route that was suspended earlier this year. The carrier recently also announced plans to launch seasonal flights from Seattle to Athens and Paris in 2027. By flight volume, Alaska Airlines is the fifth-largest U.S. carrier and, following its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, currently accounts for approximately 6% of total U.S. flights. In recent months, the airline has been adjusting routes across multiple markets, adding flights in some and cutting capacity in others.
Of the 7 canceled routes, 3 involve Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR). Alaska Airlines will not resume seasonal flights from Puerto Vallarta to Sacramento, St. Louis, or New York Kennedy in 2027.

All three routes were launched only last year and typically operated from January to April each year. The Puerto Vallarta–Kennedy and Puerto Vallarta–Sacramento flights last operated in April; the Puerto Vallarta–St. Louis route ended in March, though the route summary table lists its final flight as April. According to Cirium flight schedule data, none of these three routes are currently scheduled for resumption in 2027. The Kennedy slots previously used for Puerto Vallarta flights have been reassigned to a fifth daily flight from Seattle to New York Kennedy. Alaska Airlines has also removed the Puerto Vallarta–Las Vegas route from its network, following the earlier cancellation of four seasonal routes from Los Angeles and Las Vegas, including Puerto Vallarta–Las Vegas. The carrier is reducing its capacity in Mexico while increasing its focus on the Hawaiian market.
Alaska Airlines is cutting two more California routes, both originating from Santa Rosa. The carrier was the first airline to bring commercial air service to Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) nearly two decades ago and remains the airport's largest airline. The canceled routes are Santa Rosa–Salt Lake City and Santa Rosa–Ontario.

As a member of the oneworld alliance, Alaska Airlines only launched the Santa Rosa–Ontario route in March of this year. The route is currently operated daily with Embraer E175 aircraft, with the schedule showing the final flight on October 31. This route was previously operated by Avelo Airlines, which canceled it in April 2025 and fully exited STS Airport late last year. At the time, Alaska Airlines and the airport stated the route would provide reliable connectivity between Sonoma County and the Inland Empire. Santa Rosa–Salt Lake City, another market with limited nonstop options in the North Bay area, was planned by the Seattle-based carrier to operate daily from November 1 through April 21, 2027, but has now been removed from the schedule.
The other canceled routes include San Luis Obispo–Las Vegas (last operated on April 20) and Sacramento–Los Cabos (last operated on April 18).
Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines is resuming the San Jose–Los Angeles route.

The route was first launched in 2017 and was suspended in January of this year, when the company cited slower-than-expected new aircraft deliveries in 2026 as the reason for cutting this route along with several other California routes from San Jose, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The route will resume on November 1 with four daily flights operated by 173-seat Boeing 737-900ER aircraft, featuring 157 economy seats and 16 business class seats; prior to the suspension, the route used 76-seat Embraer E175 aircraft, and capacity will increase from 76 to 173 seats.
