Canada's WestJet cuts about 27 U.S. routes, with Vancouver and Edmonton hit hardest

en.Wedoany.com Reported - WestJet will significantly shrink its transborder route network. Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows that compared with routes operated from January 2025 through July of this year, the airline will cut approximately 27 routes between August 2026 and June 2027.

The adjustment comes against the backdrop of strained Canada-U.S. relations. Tariff disputes and remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting Canada become the "51st state" have fueled Canadian discontent with Washington's diplomatic style, weakening demand for cross-border leisure travel.

Vancouver is the airport most affected by the cuts. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in British Columbia accounts for 8 of the 27 shelved routes, primarily leisure routes to sun destinations such as Hawaii, Florida, and California, including Fort Lauderdale, Lihue, San Diego, San Francisco, and Tampa. After the cuts, WestJet will no longer offer any scheduled service to Lihue, and will also suspend routes from Vancouver to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Nashville International Airport (BNA). In a statement obtained by The Vancouver Sun, the company said it is redeploying capacity freed up by the Vancouver route cuts to other regions, "offering the most extensive flight schedule to Latin America and the Caribbean this winter, with annual capacity growing 12% between the sun destinations Canadians love and communities served by the existing network."

Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is another major hub for the cuts. WestJet will suspend service from the airport to five U.S. cities—Atlanta, Chicago, Nashville, Seattle, and San Francisco—routes with weaker leisure characteristics than those cut from Vancouver. In the 12 months through May, these were the poorest-performing U.S. routes from Edmonton in terms of load factor: Chicago at just 62.54%, Nashville at 70.77%, Atlanta at 72.7%, San Francisco at 76.26%, and Seattle at 79.01%; meanwhile, the best-performing Edmonton-to-Orlando route exceeded 90% during the same period.

However, WestJet has not abandoned the U.S. market from Edmonton. Between August 2026 and June 2027, it will still operate at least 9 transborder routes, including two to Hawaii (Honolulu and Maui) and seven others connecting Edmonton with Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Orlando, Palm Springs, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City.

Cuts at other Canadian cities are relatively smaller in scale. Regina, Winnipeg, and Saskatoon will no longer have flights to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) or Orlando International Airport (MCO); Toronto will cut two destinations, Las Vegas and Los Angeles; Kelowna and Victoria will each lose one Las Vegas route; and Halifax and St. John's will lose leisure routes to Orlando. Fort Myers, Florida, is also among the affected destinations, as WestJet will no longer fly there from Ottawa. Additionally, after removing the Raleigh-Durham route from Calgary, WestJet will no longer serve that North Carolina hub.
