Yunnan Construction Investment Group Signs Contract for Phase II of Astana Light Rail Project in Kazakhstan
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 30, Yunnan Construction Investment Group (YCIH) and China Railway Yaiou Construction Investment Co., Ltd. signed a subcontract for the Phase II project of the Astana Light Rail in Kazakhstan, at a ceremony held in Zhengzhou. Wang Wei, Vice General Manager of YCIH, signed the contract on behalf of the group. Duisebayev, Executive Chairman of Astana City Transportation Systems (CTS), Zhou Haiwei, Chairman of China Railway Yaiou, and Chen Zujun, Chairman of YCIH, attended the signing event.

The Phase II of the Astana Light Rail is planned to cover routes toward the "Astana-1" railway station, the Prigorodny residential area, and the city of Kosshy, with a total length of 26.5 kilometers and a planned total of 20 stations. The Kazakh side launched relevant works for Phase II in May this year, with plans for the Kosshy direction to construct over 300 bridge piers, install 538 precast reinforced concrete beams, and 8 cast-in-place beams; the first bridge pier was poured in early May, and the first precast reinforced concrete beam has been produced.
From July to August this year, CTS continued to advance the environmental approval process for the Phase II project. The relevant project documents cover the Saryarka, Nura, and Yesil districts of Astana, with routes including from Kabanbay Batyr Avenue via Syganak Street, Aitmatov Street, Turan Avenue, Saryarka Avenue, and Zhenis Avenue to the railway station, as well as sections extending along Kabanbay Batyr Avenue and Karkaraly Highway toward the city limits. The project's environmental impact report and environmental permit documents have entered the public hearing process.
Phase I of the Astana Light Rail was officially opened to traffic in May this year. The line has a total length of 22.4 kilometers, with 18 stations and 1 depot, and is equipped with a total of 19 trains, of which 15 are in daily operation and 4 are on standby, adopting a GoA4 fully automatic driverless operation system. The line connects Astana International Airport, the city's core area, and Nurly Zhol railway station, with a total travel time of approximately 40 minutes.
The EPC contract amount for the Phase I project is US$1.888 billion, implemented by a consortium led by China Railway Yaiou. YCIH entered the Phase I project construction in 2023, successively undertaking works including the second work area of the first section of Phase I, station steel structures, production management services for concrete mixing plants, and interval steel box girders. In July 2024, YCIH announced that its cumulative winning bid amount in the Phase I project had reached RMB 416 million.
At the signing event held on August 30, in addition to the subcontract signed between YCIH and China Railway Yaiou for the Phase II project of the Astana Light Rail, subcontracts and construction commitment letters for the Almaty Metro project and the Building Materials MALL project were also completed on site. The specific construction sections, contract amount, and construction period of the Phase II subcontract for the Astana Light Rail have not yet been disclosed.
