US Guam $40 Million GAMMA Expected to Reach Full Capacity by February 2027

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Applied Science and Technology Research Organization of America (ASTRO America) expects its Guam manufacturing accelerator, GAMMA, to reach full operational capacity by February 2027, a delay from its previously targeted late summer 2026 goal. Neal Orringer, co-founder, president, and chairman of the board of ASTRO America, attributed the delay to the challenge of completing base construction within approximately 15 months following the opening ceremony held in November 2025. "We are integrating everything as quickly as we possibly can," Orringer said.

The $40 million facility, funded by the U.S. Navy's Maritime Industrial Base Program, aims to enable the military to print replacement parts for submarines and other equipment directly on Guam, rather than importing them from thousands of miles away.

Orringer and GAMMA Director Alex Benham stated that the center is designed around part validation rather than sheer output. Equipment currently in operation for microscopic inspection, welding, and milling is already running, while an X-ray CT scanner for deeper inspection has yet to arrive. "Qualification is critical—confirming that a part is manufactured correctly requires hundreds of pages of data. Because if a part lacks sufficient density and cannot withstand impact, it could be a matter of life and death," Orringer said.

Training is a core component of the program. ASTRO America has invited the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Guam to establish mechanical engineering programs by fall 2027. Orringer stated: "Without a well-trained and capable workforce, manufacturing is impossible. Our goal is not just to create a program that lasts only a few years. I believe there is a strong desire for this industry among the people here."

Once the Navy's parts manufacturing needs are met, ASTRO America plans to open the facility to other organizations. "By February 2027, this plant will be a world-class facility, comparable to any advanced manufacturing plant in the world. And it just happens to be located on Guam," Orringer said.
