Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia Secures €25 Million to Build 5 Biomethane Plants in Portugal by 2026

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia has secured a €25 million investment to build five renewable biomethane production units in Portugal, expected to be operational by the end of 2026.

The project financing is provided by Crédito Agrícola bank. The five units will be deployed at ERSUC in Coimbra and Aveiro, Valorlis in Leiria, Amarsul in Seixal, and Valorsul in Amadora.

Together, the five facilities will have a maximum annual production capacity of up to 170 GWh of biomethane, using as feedstock the recovery of approximately 600,000 tonnes of biodegradable municipal waste per year. Once operational, the project will convert around 20.3 million cubic metres of biogas annually into biomethane meeting the quality requirements for injection into Portugal's national natural gas grid, marking the first time this renewable gas will be injected at scale into the country's national infrastructure.

Supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the project is expected to avoid approximately 50,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions per year by recovering methane from the organic fraction of municipal waste and reducing fossil natural gas use.

Hugo Pereira, CEO of Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia, stated that the project transforms municipal waste into clean energy, strengthening the company's contribution to economic decarbonisation and national energy security.

Rodolfo Varela Pinto, Director at Crédito Agrícola bank, stated that the financial sector plays a role in promoting sustainable investment and accelerating the energy transition, and that this transaction supports decarbonisation, resource recovery, and energy autonomy, security, and resilience.

Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia is also developing a second batch of five biomethane production projects, scheduled for implementation between 2027 and 2030, targeting an output of nearly 500 GWh per year.
