Topsoe awarded FEED contract for 115,000-tonne e-methanol project in Sweden

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 31, Uniper confirmed that it has signed a FEED contract with Topsoe for the NorthStarH2 e-methanol project. Located in Östersund, Sweden, the project is planned to produce approximately 115,000 tonnes of e-methanol per year. The FEED scope to be executed by Topsoe will utilize its ModuLite e-methanol technology, covering front-end engineering design for methanol synthesis and gas compression systems. The project has now progressed from early development to the basic engineering design phase.

Topsoe is one of four engineering and technology suppliers selected by Uniper in this round. Uniper simultaneously signed contracts with AFRY, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy, and Topsoe, with the total value of the four contracts exceeding SEK 100 million. The related engineering work is expected to last approximately one year. During the FEED phase, the suppliers will complete engineering design for electrolytic hydrogen production, carbon capture, methanol synthesis, and purification, with AFRY also serving as the lead contractor for the project's FEED engineering.

NorthStarH2 will use renewable electricity to produce hydrogen and synthesize e-methanol with biogenic carbon dioxide captured from flue gas generated by biomass combustion. Uniper has previously signed a carbon dioxide supply agreement with local energy company Jämtkraft, and the project plans to utilize biogenic carbon dioxide from Jämtkraft's combined heat and power facility. Uniper's current target is to produce approximately 115,000 tonnes of e-methanol per year, utilizing approximately 160,000 tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide.

The project's power grid connection conditions have already been determined. In October 2024, Uniper signed a binding 175 MW grid connection agreement with Jämtkraft, involving an investment of approximately SEK 500 million to supply power to the planned NorthStarH2 production facility in the Lugnvik industrial area of Östersund. The project also plans to source thermal energy, process steam, and grid connection services from Jämtkraft, and will include interfaces for flue gas transfer and treatment with the thermal power plant.

According to Uniper's latest project schedule, the company plans to submit an environmental permit application in autumn 2026, make a final investment decision (FID) in 2028, and currently plans to commence project commissioning in 2031. The contracts signed at this stage cover FEED and basic engineering design, and have not yet entered the project construction or EPC contracting phase.
