India's Rs 60 Billion Phenol-Acetone Plant Completed and Commissioned with Annual Capacity of 560,000 Tons

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 14, Adperma, a subsidiary of India's Haldia Petrochemicals, held a commissioning ceremony for its integrated phenol and acetone plant in Haldia, West Bengal. The project represents a total investment of approximately Rs 60 billion (60 billion Indian rupees), with a designed annual production capacity of 345,000 tons of phenol and 215,000 tons of acetone, totaling 560,000 tons per year. The facility is currently India's largest integrated phenol-acetone production base and the first phenol production plant in the country's eastern coastal region.

The new plant is connected to Haldia Petrochemicals' existing petrochemical production base, utilizing propylene and benzene supplied by the industrial park as raw materials and adopting process technology licensed by Lummus Technology to build cumene, phenol, and acetone-related production facilities. The project adopts an integrated upstream-downstream layout, linking basic petrochemical raw material supply with phenol and acetone production within the same industrial park.

Haldia Petrochemicals signed an amended technology license agreement with Lummus Technology in November 2024, increasing the designed annual capacity of the phenol unit from 300,000 tons to 345,000 tons. The project's originally planned annual acetone capacity was 185,000 tons, and the designed capacity announced at commissioning increased to 215,000 tons. Both capacity figures adopted at this commissioning are higher than the earlier plans.

The chemical base also features a dedicated propylene production unit using olefin conversion technology to expand upstream raw material supply for the phenol industry chain. Haldia Petrochemicals' previously announced project plan lists this unit as India's first dedicated propylene production facility using olefin conversion technology and incorporates the phenol plant into the company's existing naphtha cracking and petrochemical product production system.

Phenol products target manufacturers of bisphenol A, polycarbonate, phenolic resins, and adhesives, while acetone is supplied to manufacturers of coatings, pharmaceuticals, solvents, and other chemical products. Following commissioning, Haldia Petrochemicals has established a production system spanning from basic petrochemical raw materials to phenol and acetone, adding raw material supply capacity for India's downstream chemical manufacturing enterprises.
