India's TARIL Secures 1400MW Transformer Order for Kaiga Nuclear Power Project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 31, Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Limited (TARIL) released a revised order notification, confirming that the company has secured a contract from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for the supply of generator transformers for Units 5 and 6 of the Kaiga Nuclear Power Project. This marks TARIL's first order in the nuclear power sector, involving two 700 MWe Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) units with a total installed capacity of 1400MW.

According to the order document submitted by TARIL on August 29, this order covers transformer manufacturing and related work, with delivery scheduled for completion within the next 35 months. The order has been classified under the company's "Large Orders" category. Under TARIL's project classification criteria, "Large Orders" correspond to contract values ranging from INR 1 billion to INR 5 billion, exclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST). The order has been placed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL), which is undertaking the associated EPC work for this project.

Units 5 and 6 of the Kaiga project are being constructed by NPCIL in Kaiga, Karnataka, utilizing India's indigenous 700 MWe PHWR technology. The two units have a combined capacity of 1400MW and are part of India's first batch of ten 700 MWe PHWR units under a fleet-wide construction program. The generator transformers supplied by TARIL will be used to transmit power generated by the two nuclear units and connect them to the transmission network.

According to NPCIL project documentation, the first pour of concrete for the nuclear island of Kaiga Unit 5 was completed on March 1, 2026, marking the commencement of the construction phase for both Kaiga Units 5 and 6. The project has obtained all statutory and regulatory approvals, bulk equipment procurement and long-lead equipment manufacturing are currently underway, and both the main EPC package for the nuclear island and the turbine island engineering package have been awarded.
