Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Has Only About 10 Days of Diesel Fuel Remaining
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 29, the International Atomic Energy Agency stated that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been without external power supply for over a week, relying on emergency diesel generators to power nuclear safety-related equipment. The on-site diesel reserves reported by the plant can last for about 10 days, which is at the minimum reserve level required by local regulations.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost connection to its last operating external power line—the 330 kV Ferosplavna-1 line—on August 20. The plant subsequently started multiple emergency diesel generators to power equipment such as cooling pumps for the six reactors and spent fuel pools. IAEA personnel have inspected most of the 20 emergency diesel generators on site and verified fuel tank levels and sustainable operating times.
The plant's off-site fuel storage last received diesel in March this year, and a new round of replenishment originally scheduled for May has been delayed due to ongoing military activities nearby. From August 27 to 28, IAEA personnel supervised the transfer of dozens of tons of diesel from two off-site locations near the plant to the site. The agency has not been granted access to the off-site fuel storage since March 2025.
The IAEA is pushing for the establishment of a seventh localized ceasefire arrangement to facilitate repairs to the Ferosplavna-1 line and restore external power supply. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was connected to 10 external power lines before the conflict. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that if external power supply cannot be restored or more diesel obtained in the near future, the plant may experience a complete station blackout in about 10 days.
