Siemens Energy to manufacture Rolls-Royce SMR turbine components in the UK
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 3, Rolls-Royce SMR confirmed that the critical steam turbine components for its first three small modular reactors in the UK will be manufactured at Siemens Energy's Newcastle facility, with the initial manufacturing scope covering high-pressure turbines and valve casings. The components will be used for the Gwyndod Power Station project on Anglesey, North Wales. Rolls-Royce SMR stated that this marks the first time in Europe that such critical turbine components for small modular reactors will be manufactured locally.

Siemens Energy's Newcastle facility also plans to undertake subsequent servicing work for the critical turbine components related to Rolls-Royce SMR's UK fleet. This manufacturing arrangement is expected to support more than 550 jobs in the Newcastle area. The factory undertaking the production work is the former CA Parsons Works, now operated by Siemens Energy.
The turbine collaboration between Rolls-Royce SMR and Siemens Energy was finalized in February 2025. At that time, the two parties signed a cooperation agreement, with Siemens Energy selected as Rolls-Royce SMR's global turbine system partner, covering steam turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems, as well as the design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of turbine systems. The UK manufacturing plan for high-pressure turbines and valve casings announced in September corresponds to the turbine system supply scope previously agreed by the two parties.
Gwyndod Power Station is the former Wylfa small modular reactor project. Great British Energy – Nuclear confirmed in November 2025 the deployment of three Rolls-Royce SMR units at Wylfa, and signed an implementation contract with Rolls-Royce SMR in April 2026, allowing site-specific design work and the ordering of critical equipment from the supply chain; on June 26, the project was officially named Gwyndod Power Station.
Each Rolls-Royce SMR employs three-loop pressurized water reactor technology, with an electrical output of 470 MWe, a thermal output of 1358 MWth, a design life of 60 years, and a design capacity factor exceeding 95%. Its power conversion system uses the Rankine cycle, and the entire plant design comprises approximately 1,500 transportable standard modules.
Rolls-Royce SMR is currently progressing through Phase 3 of the UK Generic Design Assessment (GDA). The UK government completed the regulatory justification approval for the SMR design in March 2026; the implementation contract signed in April has already permitted the Gwyndod project to proceed with site-specific design and procurement of critical long-lead equipment. The specific manufacturing start date, component quantities, and related contract values for this turbine component manufacturing arrangement have not yet been announced.
