Amazon Signs 50 MW / 200 MWh Battery Storage Capacity Tolling Agreement in Australia
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Amazon has signed a tolling agreement with Sydney-based Anza Power for the 50 MW / 200 MWh Bairnsdale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) currently under development in Victoria, Australia. The agreement grants Amazon the right to access the energy stored in the system, with Amazon controlling charging and discharging and engaging in grid arbitrage; Amazon bears no responsibility for facility construction or maintenance, and is only required to pay Anza Power a fixed fee on a regular basis.

This marks Amazon's first-ever such agreement for a standalone battery energy storage system globally, and the first time a non-energy company has signed a battery storage capacity tolling agreement in Australia.
In Australia, other companies with battery storage capacity tolling agreements include electricity retailers or developers, such as EnergyAustralia and Akaysha Energy. Among them, Akaysha Energy has signed a 12-year virtual capacity tolling agreement for the Orana BESS.
The Bairnsdale Battery Energy Storage System will connect directly to the grid as a standalone grid asset, providing dedicated storage capacity that is not tied to solar or wind farms.
Anza CEO Carlo Frigerio stated that the agreement reflects growing demand from large power buyers for dedicated storage solutions, which help support a reliable, low-carbon grid. He said the Bairnsdale project demonstrates Anza's ability to deliver flexible energy infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of the market and customers, and the company looks forward to building on the momentum established since Anza's launch earlier this year.
Anza and Amazon have also signed other agreements, including five solar-plus-battery storage power purchase agreements (PPAs). The Bairnsdale BESS project is the seventh energy agreement Anza has signed since its inception. Anza was created and launched by I Squared Capital in January 2026, and has secured AUD 418.5 million (USD 300 million) in equity commitments through I Squared Capital's ISQ Growth Markets Infrastructure Fund II.
