China's First "Hualong One" with Cooling Tower: CGN's Zhaoyuan Unit 2 Commences Construction Today
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 5, the first concrete pouring (FCD) for the nuclear island of Unit 2 at CGN's Zhaoyuan Nuclear Power Project in Shandong commenced this morning, marking the official start of the main project construction for this unit and the full-scale construction phase of the project's first phase.

The main project construction of Unit 1 at the Zhaoyuan Nuclear Power Project commenced on November 18, 2025.
Located in Zhangxing Town, Zhaoyuan City, Yantai, the Zhaoyuan Nuclear Power Project is CGN's tenth nuclear power base nationwide. The project plans to build six "Hualong One" nuclear power units, adopting China's third-generation nuclear power technology with fully independent intellectual property rights, with each unit having a rated electrical output of approximately 1.2 million kilowatts.
This project is also China's first "Hualong One" nuclear power unit project equipped with high-level water intake natural draft cooling towers — each unit is fitted with a cooling tower reaching 203 meters in height with a spray area of 16,800 square meters, converting the direct cooling source of the conventional island from the sea to the atmosphere.
Once fully completed, the project is expected to generate 50 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, meeting the annual production and living electricity needs of over 5 million people. In terms of environmental benefits, it is equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by approximately 15.02 million tons per year and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by about 46.2 million tons, equivalent to planting trees over more than 110,000 hectares.
According to CGN's announcement, Unit 2 adopts Hualong One nuclear power technology, and China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN Power Co., Ltd.) issued a related announcement on September 4.
