TÜV Rheinland Germany Verifies Aptera Solar EV Generates Over 4 kWh Daily
en.Wedoany.com Reported - TÜV Rheinland of Germany conducted three consecutive days of outdoor testing on Aptera Motors Corp.'s solar electric vehicle in Southern California. The testing confirmed that the vehicle generated more than 4 kilowatt-hours of usable solar energy per day, with data derived from real-world outdoor measurements of the vehicle's integrated photovoltaic (VIPV) system.

Long-standing skepticism about vehicle-integrated solar has centered on three issues: low module mounting angles, susceptibility to shading, and the limited body surface area available for photovoltaics. The test results, however, show that the battery layout and power electronics operated stably under field conditions. It should be noted that the energy recorded during testing was the actual electricity that reached the battery pack, not a theoretical output calculated from irradiance on the module surface.
The assessment was carried out by TÜV Rheinland's Giorgio Bardizza at Aptera's facility in Carlsbad, California, using calibrated data logging equipment to continuously track energy generation from sunrise to sunset. The test vehicle's photovoltaic system had a peak power rating of 815.9 watts.
The testing covered three vehicle states: stationary parking, rotating the vehicle once at solar noon, and opening the rear hatch facing the sun. The energy delivered to the battery under these three conditions was 4.23 kWh, 4.40 kWh, and 4.75 kWh, respectively, all exceeding Aptera's daily baseline target of 4.0 kWh. Based on the vehicle's efficiency rating of 100 watt-hours per mile, the maximum daily charge corresponds to approximately 47 miles of driving range.
The solar system on the test vehicle divides 205 custom solar cells into seven independent strings, arranged across four body areas: the hood, dashboard, roof, and rear hatch. String-level power recordings show combined system conversion losses of 9.2% to 9.6%, indicating that the sub-arrays maintained stable outdoor efficiency.
Vehicle-integrated photovoltaics (VIPV) are increasingly penetrating commercial fleets and passenger vehicle markets. Such independent third-party testing provides a benchmark for the real-world performance of vehicle-integrated solar products, beyond traditional photovoltaic array applications.
