The company stated that this is a key step toward commercializing superhot rock geothermal energy.

Superhot Rock Drilling

Superhot rock geothermal energy targets rock formations with subsurface temperatures exceeding 750°F (399°C), conditions that have previously destroyed equipment before it could set records. Actual drilling data from the Athena well shows that the drill bit not only withstood the harsh conditions but also achieved peak rates of penetration exceeding 350 feet per hour, maintaining over 130 feet per hour across long intervals. A single drill bit drilled through 3,578 feet of hard rock without any failures in the downhole motor or directional tools, successfully reaching the planned casing point. Pat Brand, Athena Project Director and Mazama Drilling Subject Matter Expert, stated that the project's goal is to prove that drilling can be faster and more cost-effective as conditions push toward hotter and deeper zones; continuing to drill into sections above 750°F still presents challenges, but the performance observed so far gives the project team confidence. The Athena well has not yet been completed, and operators are advancing toward the final target depth of 15,500 feet to tap superhot geothermal resources.

The output capacity of superhot resources comes from the supercritical state of water. When downhole temperatures exceed 700°F (371.1°C) under immense rock pressure, water enters a supercritical state, behaving as a high-density fluid between liquid and gas, with far greater heat capacity and fluidity than in its normal state, capable of carrying large amounts of thermal energy to the surface with minimal flow resistance. As a result, a single supercritical well can generate 5 to 10 times more electricity than a conventional geothermal well. The recoverable thermal resources in the Newberry geothermal field alone are estimated to exceed 10 gigawatts, with the potential to provide reliable 24/7 carbon-free power.

Sriram Vasantharajan, CEO of Mazama Energy, noted that initial development costs for the Newberry project are expected to range between $4,500 and $4,950 per kilowatt, potentially falling to $3,200 per kilowatt as the technology matures—a price point at which superhot geothermal would directly challenge the economics of natural gas. The company expects that Athena's drilling results will lay the foundation for Project Ceres, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, which plans to spud the world's first commercial-scale superhot horizontal wells by the end of 2026. Mazama Energy's validated superhot rock platform optimizes well construction, drilling, and stimulation operations to minimize water usage, land footprint, and the number of wells required while enhancing power generation capacity.
