India's POWERGRID Wins 7.5 GW Renewable Energy Transmission Project
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 7, India's Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) won the bid for the Phase II transmission project of the Lakadia Renewable Energy Zone in Gujarat. The project will be developed under the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model to construct an inter-state transmission system, facilitating the evacuation of power from 7,500 MW of renewable energy projects in the region. POWERGRID quoted an annual transmission charge of INR 11,524.9 million and received the Letter of Intent (LoI) on September 3.

The core scope of the project includes the construction of a new 765/400kV Lakadia-II substation, the development of multiple 765kV transmission lines along with associated bays and auxiliary equipment, as well as the installation and commissioning of synchronous condensers at the Lakadia-II substation.
According to the official transmission service agreement in India, the Lakadia region is planned to accommodate approximately 11 GW of renewable energy capacity. Of this, the existing Lakadia substation can already absorb 3.5 GW, while the remaining 7.5 GW will be connected through the newly built Lakadia-II system. The Lakadia-II substation is planned to be equipped with six 1,500 MVA 765/400kV transformers and ten 500 MVA 400/220kV transformers.
The transmission line works include the loop-in-loop-out of the existing Halvad—Kandla 765kV double-circuit line into Lakadia-II, as well as the construction of new Lakadia-II—Ahmedabad and Lakadia-II—Vataman 765kV double-circuit lines. The project will also be equipped with 330 MVAr switchable line reactors and associated reactive power compensation facilities.
India's Central Transmission Utility (CTU) approved the scheme in January 2026, and the Ministry of Power subsequently approved its implementation through a competitive bidding process based on transmission charges in February. The project has a planned construction period of 36 months. The Lakadia-II system will also be interconnected with the transmission systems of Lakadia Phase II, Jam Khambhaliya Phase II, and Jamnagar Phase I, undertaking the task of transmitting power from the large-scale renewable energy hub in western Gujarat to load centers in southern Gujarat and Maharashtra.
