Australia's AUD 54.88 million South Ayr Water Treatment Plant Phase I Commissioned

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 14, the Queensland Government of Australia announced that Phase I of the South Ayr Filtration Plant, built at an investment of AUD 54.88 million, has been completed and put into operation. The project is jointly implemented by the Queensland Government and the Burdekin Shire Council. The new facility treats groundwater from the South Ayr bore field and supplies water to Ayr, Brandon, and Alva.

The new water treatment facility adopts a multi-stage treatment process, mainly including iron and manganese pretreatment, dual-media filtration, disinfection, and solid waste treatment systems. The treatment target is water drawn from the South Ayr groundwater bore field, and the purified drinking water is connected to the local existing water supply system. Phase I construction is located within the existing South Ayr Water Treatment Plant site.

The Burdekin Shire Council previously determined through public procurement that Tallai Project Group Pty Ltd would be the main contractor for Phase I works, with contract number TBSC/23/037 and a construction contract amount of AUD 34,487,777, excluding GST. The contractor's scope of work is to build the complete filtration facility in accordance with the design completed by GHD in 2022 and deliver the system to an operational state.

During project execution, GHD undertook engineering design and subsequent engineering consulting work, and the contractor advanced construction together with the local government project manager and engineering consultant. At the award stage, the local government also applied to the Queensland Government for an additional AUD 8 million in funding to cover the construction cost of the Phase I filtration facility.

The South Ayr project is also listed among the Burdekin Shire Council's key capital works for 2025–2026, with approximately AUD 24,325,370 in state government funding allocated in that year's budget for works related to the South Ayr Filtration Plant and South Ayr Bore. With the Phase I facility now in operation, the project has moved from the construction stage to the actual water supply operation stage.
