en.Wedoany.com Reported - The City of Johannesburg has announced the latest progress on Phase 2 of the Lilian Ngoyi Street rehabilitation project. The overall completion of the 1.8-kilometer construction corridor has exceeded 75%, and the city government is maintaining its plan to reopen the road by October 31, 2026. The total project investment is approximately 192 million rand, and it is being advanced by the Johannesburg Roads Agency. The main works currently focus on underground infrastructure restoration, road structure reconstruction, and subsequent pavement works.

This section was severely damaged after an underground methane gas explosion in 2023. The accident not only destroyed the road structure but also affected underground water supply, electricity, and other municipal pipelines. Therefore, this project is not merely a road resurfacing but a comprehensive reconstruction of the road foundation and underground service systems. During construction, excavation in some areas has reached a depth of 5 meters to rebuild the foundation structure and reserve space for water supply, electricity, and new municipal facilities.

The project is currently in the late stage of Phase 2 construction. Mayor Dada Morero, City Manager Floyd Brink, and the management team of the Johannesburg Roads Agency have conducted an on-site inspection of the 1.8-kilometer construction corridor. The Roads Agency confirmed that the main construction tasks are planned to be completed before the October reopening, and there is currently no adjustment to the October 31 target for restoring traffic.

The remaining work in this round is directly related to the conditions for road reopening, including the finalization of underground infrastructure, restoration of the road foundation and pavement, and the overall restoration of the traffic corridor. Since the construction involves both the road and the underground water and electricity networks, the various specialized works need to be implemented in sequence: underground facility construction, foundation restoration, and surface road works.
