GE Vernova Wins Gas Turbine Order in Malaysia, Project Plans 1.5GW

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 15, GE Vernova signed a gas turbine equipment supply agreement with B.Grimm Power to supply one gas turbine and associated generator for a combined cycle gas power plant project in Perlis, Malaysia. The project is planned for a total installed capacity of up to approximately 1,500 MW, adopting a phased construction approach. This batch of equipment is scheduled for delivery in 2027, with the first phase targeting commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2029.

The project is located at the existing power plant site in Kuala Sungai Baru, Perlis, and is a redevelopment project following the retirement of the original Teknologi Tenaga Perlis Consortium (TTPC) gas power plant. The original plant had an installed capacity of 650 MW and covered approximately 37.5 hectares. It was retired in March 2024 after fulfilling a 21-year power purchase agreement. The new project will continue to utilize the site's existing transmission access, natural gas pipeline, water intake facilities, and related power infrastructure to build a new generation combined cycle gas unit.

Public project information shows that the first phase equipment plan has been locked in for one GE Vernova 9HA.02 gas turbine and one H78 generator. GE Vernova's published 9HA.02 product specifications show that this model has a single-unit output of approximately 571 MW in 50 Hz simple cycle operation and is primarily used for large combined cycle power plants. The Perlis project adopts a phased expansion approach, with an overall planned capacity of approximately 1,500 MW. The final scale still depends on regulatory approvals and subsequent development phases.

The equity and responsibility relationships of the project development entity were further determined in 2026. In January, Malaysia's Kinergy Advancement and B.Grimm Power completed a cooperation arrangement. B.Grimm Power Tiara, under B.Grimm Power, acquired a 49% stake in the project investment platform Jati Cakerawala for 41.52 million ringgit, while KAB Energy Holdings, under Kinergy, retained 51%. Jati Cakerawala holds an 80% stake in TTPC, and Malaysia's national power company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) holds the remaining 20% stake in TTPC. TTPC is responsible for the project development of the Perlis power plant site.

Regarding the construction timeline, Kinergy previously disclosed that the project's engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning work is planned to commence in the first quarter of 2027, with the first phase planned to enter commercial operation by the end of 2029. This GE Vernova equipment contract further clarifies that the gas turbine and generator will be delivered in 2027, aligning with the project construction schedule. B.Grimm Power Chairman Harald Link further specified the first phase commercial operation milestone as the fourth quarter of 2029.

The project is being advanced under an independent power producer model. Previously disclosed development arrangements show that the electricity generated by the plant is planned to be sold to TNB through a power purchase agreement, which was previously planned to be completed in the third quarter of 2026. Kinergy also plans to participate in EPCC engineering execution during the project construction phase and transition to long-term power asset operation after the project is commissioned.

The new Perlis power plant is a redevelopment implemented on the site of the original 650 MW gas power plant. The original TTPC plant's 21-year power purchase agreement with TNB expired on March 31, 2024; after the retirement of the original 650 MW units, the site's transmission access, natural gas supply pipeline, and water intake system became the infrastructure to be further utilized by the new project. The project developer is currently advancing a new round of gas combined cycle construction based on an overall capacity of approximately 1,500 MW, and the first phase has entered the stage of locking in core main equipment.

In addition to the Malaysian equipment supply contract, GE Vernova and B.Grimm Power also signed a 14-year long-term service agreement on the same day, covering a total of five LM6000 gas turbine units at B.Grimm Power's Bangkadi 1 and Bangkadi 2 power plants in Thailand. The already operational units at the Bangkadi project use GE LM6000 series aeroderivative gas turbines. This agreement corresponds to long-term operation services for existing units and, together with the new gas turbine project in Perlis, Malaysia, belongs to two categories of contracts: new equipment supply and existing unit services.
